An East Texas deputy constable was shot and killed Wednesday at a Houston shopping mall, officials said.

The shooting happened shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday in the PlazAmericas mall in southeastern Houston. Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said in a news conference Wednesday night that San Jacinto County Precinct 1 Deputy Constable Neil Adams was working an extra job at the mall when he got into a confrontation with the alleged shooter.

During the confrontation, the suspect got a hold of the deputy’s weapon and fatally shot him, Finner said, according to KHOU-11.

The suspect, a 35-year-old male, fled to the food court in the mall. When he encountered two Houston police officers, he came at them with a sharp object, possibly a knife, Finner said. The officers shot the suspect, and he later died, according to police.

Adams went through the police academy in 2012 and worked as the county’s environmental officer, San Jacinto County Constable Roy Rogers said. The deputy’s wife, Dee Dee Adams, spoke briefly at Wednesday night’s news conference.

“My husband always said that you can either be a sheep or a sheep dog,” she said. “And I want everybody to pray for all the sheep dogs out there that are protecting everybody.”
